Chicago Accident Victims: Are You Suffering From a Brain Injury?
Josephine September 9, 2011
The signs and symptoms of brain injuries are numerous and varied, making it difficult for Chicago accident victims to know whether they are afflicted. What tests do doctors use to diagnose a brain injury? The following is a list of the most common tools:
- Neurological Examination – Most doctors will first perform an exam that tests such things as your memory, balance, vision, and hearing. The physician will also take a detailed report of the accident that caused your suspected trauma injuries.
- CT Scan – Your doctor may also order a CT scan, which is a two dimensional image of your brain formed using x-rays of the area. The x-rays are quick and painless, taken while you lay on a flat surface inside a large tube. CT scans are generally ordered for the elderly, following motor accidents, and following a seizure.
- MRI – Your medical practitioner may also request an MRI, or Magnetic Resonance Imaging. Similar to the CT scan, the procedure is painless and requires you to lay on a flat surface inside of a large tube. The machines inside the tube use magnetism to create a detailed image of the brain.
- Observation – If the brain injury is severe, the doctor may admit you to the hospital for overnight observation. You will likely be awakened and checked on periodically during that time. The physician may also allow the observation to be performed at home by a friend or family member.
