CULLOTTA LAW OFFICES SCI NEWS : Paralyzed Athlete's Project to Cure Paralysis

Posted on Nov 23, 2011

At the young age of 15, Canadian Richard M. Hansen suffered a spinal cord injury as a result of a car accident. The injury left him paralyzed from the waist down. He has since gone on to become a Canadian Paralympian and international hero after successfully circling the world in his wheel chair as part of his Man in Motion World Tour.

As part of the Tour, he crossed through 34 countries and traversed over 25,000 miles between the years 1985 and 1987. The Tour raised $26 million for spinal cord injury research. Mr. Hansen continues to raise money for spinal cord injury research and serves as an advocate for awareness.

In late June, 2011, in celebration of the 25th anniversary of his Man in Motion World Tour, Mr. Hansen visited the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis. As part of his visit, Mr. Hansen signed a memorandum of understanding regarding cooperative research in the field of spinal cord injury. He also came to honor Mr. Marc Buoniconti and Edelle Field-Fote, Ph.D. for their fundraising, advocacy, and research efforts.

Mr. Hansen strongly believes that collaboration among researchers is an important step towards finding a cure for paralysis and better treatments for spinal cord injuries. His visit to Miami was the last stop made in celebration of the anniversary, with previous visits to such international locations as Jordan, Israel, Australia, and China.
