National Spinal Cord Injury Awareness

Posted on Nov 22, 2011

As a result of a resolution co-sponsored by Senators Marco Rubio and Bill Nelson of Florida, the U.S. Senate recently declared September to be National Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month. The two senators began their campaign for the designation in an effort to increase awareness of the need for better treatments and preventative measures for spinal cord injuries. This devastating injury is prevalent throughout our country. In fact, every 48 minutes a U.S. citizen will suffer paralysis as a result of a spinal cord injury. There is currently no cure for this affliction.

In support of the new resolution, the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis has launched an awareness campaign with the slogan "Will You Stand Up for Those Who Can't?" The overall goal of the Miami Project is to open up dialogue and increase public awareness surrounding spinal cord injury. The Miami Project also hopes to educate the public on techniques for prevention and promote the latest research efforts aimed at finding a cure for paralysis.

Unfortunately, since there are only limited treatments available for paralysis, victims are forced to accept their condition as potentially permanent. Spinal cord injury effects every age, race, and gender worldwide. An injury can occur at any moment, in any place. It is essential that increased efforts for finding treatments and better means for prevention be developed in the future.
